HOW IT WORKS?

This object is as simple as effective and maybe that's why earlier in 1300 or 1250 b.C. in ancient Greece and Rome, were used very similar objects called "Fibula" for various utility functions.

Is normally one piece of metal with two parts very fine and long that in one of the extremities is folded with two turns, causing a spring effect and at the other end has a slot in which a pointed part fits.  This slot serves two purposes: to form a closed loop thereby properly fastening the pin to whatever it is applied to, and to cover the end of the pin to protect the user from the sharp point.

The safety pin runs through the elastic capacity of the material it is made, typically metal, utilizing a spring effect that allows one end peaked has space to engage and disengage so that when closed it remains so without the loose risk.

With
a material that does not have enough elasticity is not possible that this object works, it is indispensable that there is a movement of the pointed end so as to open and close.

Yes, it is, however is possible to hurt ourselves using it, it wouldn't be the first time that someone was sting at the sharp end of a safety pin, this isn't the purpose of this object, is exactly the opposite, prevent someone to hurt himself at its sharpened tip, this tip can not cease to exist, cause without it, this object loses all its usefulness, and because of that, its was created the mortise of the safety pin, so that made it almost impossible to open it without an intentional gesture, but when opened requires careful.. Nowadays pins are used with double security, the traditional mortise and a second closure that slides to lock any possibility to open unintentionally.

IN THE FUTURE

It is impossible to predict how this object will develop in the future. The shape is likely to hold the same mechanism, using as the innovative part, for example, different technological applications. However, due to the simplicity and efficiency of this object, it allows major developments in the mechanical aspect. As can be seen from his earliest "ancestors" of thousands of years ago, its shape does not change much. Probably can be replaced by any other objects with the same function not involving sharp tip.
